He was born to the late Joe B. and Regursey Layton of Spartanburg, S.C. He was a lifelong member of Hill Street Baptist Church where he served with the Laymen League and was a devoted member of the Men's and Senior Choirs.
Boyce graduated from Stephens-Lee High School, Class of 1943. He served briefly in the Navy. He worked at the Asheville Country Club for 20 years and retired from the Asheville Downtown City Club. An avid golfer, Boyce was a founding member of the Skyview Golf Association. In later years, he became an honorary member of the Association.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Julius C. Layton and a sister, Jo Amelia Pryor.
Boyce leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 56 years, Ethel; daughters, Anita (James) Campbell of Charlotte and Sherry Layton of Columbus, Ohio; son, Boyce H. Layton Jr. of Asheville; brother, Lewis Layton of Cleveland, Ohio; two grandsons; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.
A funeral service was held at the Hill Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith A. Ogden officiating. The body was placed in the church one hour prior to the service. Burial was in Sunset Cemetery.
